SUMMARY:Seminar - Dr. Hongyou Fan
DESCRIPTION:Nanoengineering through Self-/Directed-Assembly:\nMultifunctional Nanostructures Made Easy\nSelf-/directed-assembly techniques are powerful and efficient methods for the synthesis of nanostructured materials. Using these techniques and their combination with top-down fabrication processes\, materials with hierarchical features can be produced with form and function in multiple length scales. This presentation will cover our research on the utilization of self-/directed-assembly techniques for the synthesis of active multifunctional nanomaterials and their photonic- and bio-applications. \nDr. Hongyou Fan received a B.Sc. degree from Jilin University\, a M.S. degree from Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry in the field of polymer chemistry and physics\, and a Ph.D. degree in 2000 from the University of New Mexico in the field of nanoporous materials and composites. Dr. Fan conducted his postdoctoral work at Sandia National Laboratories\, Albuquerque before working there full time. Currently he is a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Sandia and a National Laboratory Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of New Mexico. His research focuses on fundamental understanding of nanoparticle assembly for active nanomaterials and for nanoelectronic and nanophotonic applications. Major honors and awards include: MRS Mid-Career Researcher Award\, MRS Kavli Distinguished Lectureship Award in Nanoscience\, APS Fellow\, MRS Fellow\, Federal Laboratory Consortium – Outstanding Technology Development Award\, R&D 100 Award for development of technically significant products\, DOE’s National Laboratory Directed Research and Development Award for Excellence\, the University of New Mexico Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award\, and the Asian American Engineer of the Year Award. \nSandia National Laboratories is a multimission laboratory managed and operated by National Technology and Engineering Solutions of Sandia\, LLC.\, a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International\, Inc.\, for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration under contract DE-NA0003525.

SUMMARY:Bioethics Lunch - Star Wars
DESCRIPTION:The Biointerfaces Interlaboratory Committees and Dr. Barry Belmont invite you to join us for our last Bioethics lunch of the semester! In celebration of both the end of another successful semester and Star Wars Day\, our May ethics lunch will be the second iteration of last year’s highly popular “Ethics of Star Wars.” Last year barely scratched the surface\, and there are many Star Wars themed ethical dilemmas left up for debate. How might human-machine interfaces and life-preservation technology lead to an evil galactic takeover? Is exerting forcible influence over another sentient being’s mind\, a mind-trick if you will\, an ethical political tactic if it’s used for the greater good? What in the many worlds is going on with the blue milk? Please join us for free lunch and insightful discussion!

SUMMARY:Bioethics Lunch - Game of Thrones
DESCRIPTION:The Biointerfaces Interlaboratory Committees (BIONIC) and Dr. Barry Belmont invite you to join us for our April Bioethics lunch! Though Winter has officially departed\, the final season of Game of Thrones is coming! If you’re even tangentially aware of the premise of the series\, you’ll know that it’s chock-full of ‘ethically interesting’ situations. Are you an ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ fanatic? Do you like expensive animation budgets? Do you hate the show but love free pizza? Do you need literally any excuse to take a break from studying for finals? If any of those sound like you\, please join us for free lunch and insightful discussion!

SUMMARY:Bioethics Lunch - Neural Interfaces
DESCRIPTION:Join BIONIC\, Dr. Barry Belmont and Dr. Parag Patil for a lunch discussion on medical therapies and technologies designed around interacting with\, reading information from\, and sending signals to the nervous system. \nSuch topics could include implantable neuroprostheses that treat disease (e.g. deep brain stimulation for Parkinson’s disease)\, brain-machine interfaces that blur the lines between humans and technology\, and the morality of cognitive or physical enhancement via augmentation of the nervous system. \nDr. Parag Patil is an Associate Professor of Neurological Surgery\, Neurology\, Anesthesiology\, and Biomedical Engineering. Dr. Patil is both a practicing neurosurgeon and the principal investigator of a research lab here at the University of Michigan. His clinical interests range from neurosurgery for pain and movement disorders\, to brain tumors and hydrocephalus. His research lab focuses on improving neural interface technologies like deep brain stimulation and brain-machine interfaces to both improve current clinical therapies\, and translate novel technologies into clinical use to improve patient outcomes.

SUMMARY:Bioethics Lunch - Publishing & Peer-Review
DESCRIPTION:BIONIC and Dr. Barry Belmont invite you to join them for lunch and a discussion on the ethics of publishing in science and the peer-review system with special guest Dr. Nick Kotov. \nPeer-review is colloquially deemed to be sub-optimal\, if not broken\, but we continue to rely upon it for publishing our results. Furthermore\, we routinely evaluate scientists (e.g. their caliber as scientists\, considerations for promotion\, etc.) based on the quantity of their publications – not the quality. How can we design an ethically-optimal system for disseminating scientific results? If not by number of publications produced by a flawed system\, how are we to evaluate the quality of researchers? If we agree that peer-review is not effective\, are we obligated to find other routes to communicate our results when our work has such huge impacts on the life of the public? In what manner should those that commit fraud and plagiarism be punished? How do we reliably determine an honest mistake and malicious behavior? \nDr. Kotov is the Joseph B. and Florence V. Cejka Professor of Engineering\, with appointments in Chemical Engineering\, Biomedical Engineering\, Materials Science and Engineering\, and Macromolecular Science and Engineering. He has authored and co-authored hundreds of scientific manuscripts\, and has written on fraud and the evaluation of scientists based on their rate of publication as an editor for the journal ACS Nano.
